Dr. James Splichal Appears on WSB Radio’s “The Weekly Check-up”

On September 4, Dr. James Splichal, a medical oncologist at University Cancer & Blood Center (UCBC), appeared on WSB’s radio show “The Weekly Check-up” with host Dr. Bruce Feinberg. A leader in oncology and hematology since 1981, UCBC is one of the most prolific clinical trial facilities in Georgia.

Dr. Splichal shared how using a patient-centered care approach has made University Cancer & Blood Center a leading practice. Rather than the conventional concept of patients finding care, the practice aims to bring innovative treatment and care to its patients.

“This idea where we can provide patient-centered care close to home that is cutting-edge, state-of-the-art, where patients don’t have to travel into Atlanta or distantly beyond for world-class care, is really our goal,” explained Dr. Splichal.

While the oncology world is ever-changing, clinical trials allow the practice to offer innovative care to patients. Dr. Splichal shared how research is vital in impacting current and future patients’ lives.

“If you are a patient that enrolls in a trial, you are helping everybody move the ball forward,” said Dr. Splichal. “You are speeding up the time when the drug is available to everyone else. It is helping you and other people as well.”

Dr. Splichal discussed one of the many ways UCBC aims to support its patients. Oncologists at University Cancer & Blood Center founded the Cancer Foundation of Northeast Georgia in 2005 to provide financial support to cancer patients. The practice also offers social work services for those seeking further resources.

“We strive our best to be compassionate and to treat patients like they would want to be treated,” said Dr. Splichal.

Dr. Splichal shared the unique benefits of Just-in-Time clinical trials, explained how the practice addresses patients’ concerns about clinical trials, and answered listeners’ questions.
